Andrew Bagguley, previously head of international portal management at T Mobile, assumes the newly created role and will be responsible for developing a mobile strategy to expand the audience of News Group, the tabloid newspaper arm of News International, increase the frequency of communication, and grow the group's revenue base.
The current News Group commercial telephony team will directly report to Bagguley. News Group, which publishes The Sun and the News of the World, believes the advances in mobile technology will make mobiles an important publishing vehicle. It claims Bagguley's appointment positions the company as the market leader in content delivery.
The appointment follows The Sun and the News of the World offer of mobile phone highlights of all Premiership games to readers as part of a three-year deal between News Group Newspapers and sister company Sky Sports.
Mike Anderson, managing director of News Group Newspapers, said: "This position has a strong focus on identifying trends in mobile development, but will interpret these trends to fit with NGN's overall publishing strategy. Key to this will be cultivating a good relationship with the network operators and representing NGN interests in the wider mobile industry."
Andrew Bagguley, head of mobile strategy at News Group Newspapers, said: "It's a very exciting time for the mobile industry as a whole and I believe NGN has a superb opportunity in mobile, delivering high-quality mobile content and products to its readers."
